Instant Pot Split Pea Soup with Ham
Description
The soup combines dry green split peas with onions, carrots, celery, and garlic sautéed briefly in olive oil to develop flavor. The addition of a ham bone enriches the broth with smoky depth while cooking under pressure in an Instant Pot offers a time-saving advantage compared to traditional long simmering. Chicken bouillon and a bay leaf add further seasoning layers.
After pressure cooking and natural pressure release, the ham bone and bay leaf are removed and the soup thickens by standing. Optionally, sautéed diced ham is added as a garnish along with chives for freshness and texture contrast.
For those without a pressure cooker, the recipe can be adapted by simmering the soup for two hours with additional water. Checking for gluten-free ingredients is advised if dietary restrictions apply.
Ingredients
- 1 lb green split pea dry
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 2 carrot peeled and diced, large
- 1 onion diced, medium
- 1/4 cup celery diced
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- ham bone leftover
- 6 cups water
- 1 tbsp bouillon Better Than Bouillon or 1 cube
- 1 bay leaf
- 4 ounces ham diced, leftover
- chives chopped for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse peas under cold water.
- In a pressure cooker, add oil, onions, carrots, celery and garlic and saute 4-5 minutes. Add ham bone, peas, water, chicken bouillon and bay leaf. Cover and cook high pressure for 15 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally then open, remove the bone and bay leaf and stir, the soup will thicken as it stands.
- Saute the ham on a hot skillet if desired and use for garnish on the soup with chives.
- To make without a pressure cooker, add 2 more cups water and simmer covered on low for 2 hours.
Notes
- Check labels of ingredients such as bouillon for gluten-free certification if needed.
- The ham bone is key for flavor, but diced ham is used as garnish and can be sautéed separately for a slightly crispy texture.
- For a longer but traditional method, simmer on low heat for 2 hours with extra water to achieve similar tenderness and flavor.
