Internet Famous Sweet Potato Pie

Internet Famous Sweet Potato Pie combines a smooth and spiced sweet potato filling with a flaky 9-inch pie crust. The filling mixes mashed sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar, eggs, warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, cloves, and creamy evaporated milk. The pie bakes initially at a high temperature to set the crust, then at a lower temperature until the filling firms up, resulting in a rich, custardy dessert that highlights the natural sweetness and spice of sweet potatoes.

Description

This recipe stands out by using a pre-made pie crust filled with a mixture of baked and mashed sweet potatoes blended with softened butter, packed brown sugar, and eggs for structure. Aromatic spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves enhance the sweet potato’s earthiness, while evaporated milk adds creaminess and depth. The crust is chilled before filling, helping maintain its form during baking.

The baking process features an initial high temperature to help set the crust and begin firming the filling, followed by a prolonged bake at a reduced temperature. This technique yields a custard-like texture with a lightly caramelized, spiced surface. Once cooled, the pie slices cleanly and offers a smooth, warmly spiced dessert.

This sweet potato pie serves well as a seasonal or holiday dessert and can be refrigerated after baking. Cooling completely aids in slicing. The pie showcases the balance of sweetness and spice traditionally expected in this classic contribution to Southern-style pies.
