Irish Cheese Toastie Recipe

Irish Cheese Toastie features buttery bread topped with a mixture of eggs, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, freshly cracked black pepper, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. The assembled toast is baked until golden, puffed, and bubbly, then finished with fresh chives. It combines a rich cheesy flavor with a lightly tangy, savory custard texture on soft bread sides, suited as a warm snack or light meal.

Description

The recipe involves buttering slices of bread on one side, then flipping them to butter the underside. A rich topping is made by whisking eggs with Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce, and then folding in shredded sharp cheddar cheese and cracked black pepper. This cheese egg mixture is spread evenly over the unbuttered side of the bread.

Baking at 425°F crisps the edges of the bread while causing the cheese mixture to puff slightly and set to a creamy, custard-like consistency with melted cheese. The topping’s tang from mustard and Worcestershire complements the sharpness of the cheddar. Fresh chives sprinkled on top add an herbal note and color contrast.

Serve immediately while still warm; this crisped toastie is suitable as a breakfast, brunch, or snack item with a rich taste similar to a cheesy egg bake on toast.
