Italian Cream Soda
Description
The Italian Cream Soda recipe starts with making a strawberry syrup by simmering diced strawberries with sugar and water until the fruit softens and breaks down. The syrup can be strained or pureed for smoothness. Once cooled, a few spoonfuls of this syrup are added to glasses filled halfway with crushed ice. Sparkling water is poured over the syrup, followed by cream or milk, which blends into the drink to create a creamy, fizzy texture. The beverage is topped with whipped cream and a fresh strawberry for garnish.
The soda balances the tartness and sweetness of strawberries with the effervescence of sparkling water and the richness of cream. It’s a versatile, refreshing drink that can be adjusted in sweetness by changing the amount of syrup or sugar substitute used. Variations with different milk types or sweeteners accommodate preferences.
This Italian Cream Soda is suitable for a cooling treat or a flavored soda alternative. The recipe notes that store-bought syrup can be used for convenience, and ingredients can be varied to personal taste.
Ingredients
- 1 cup strawberries diced into small pieces, fresh or frozen
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup sugar (or sweetener or choice (ex. stevia, honey, etc.))
- 4 cups sparkling water (soda water, or club soda (store-bought or homemade with a Soda Stream Machine))
- 4 tablespoon cream (or milk, or milk of choice (ex. oat milk, almond milk, etc.))
Garnish
- 4 tablespoon Whipped Cream
- 4 strawberry fresh
Instructions
- In a small sauce pan over medium heat add the strawberries, water, and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring often. Then reduce heat to low.
- Cover and cook the strawberries for about 5 minutes or until berries are cooked down. Use a spoon or fork to mash the strawberries to help break them down.
- Optional: Strain the mixture through a sieve or puree in a blender or food processor.
- Set the strawberry sauce aside to cool at room temperature, or chill in the fridge for 5 – 10 minutes.
- To serve the drinks add 3-4 spoons of the strawberry syrup to the bottom of 4 drinking glasses. Top with enough crushed ice (or ice cubes) to fill the cup half way.
- Pour 1 cup of sparkling water into the glasses and top with 2-3 tablespoons of cream (or milk).
- Top with whipped cream and a strawberry to serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Fresh or frozen strawberries can be used to make the syrup; both work well.
- The strawberry syrup can be strained for a smoother texture or blended for a thicker sauce.
- Adjust the amount of syrup, sparkling water, and cream to suit your preferred sweetness and creaminess.
- Store-bought flavored syrup may substitute homemade syrup for convenience.
