Italian Meatballs

Italian Meatballs are prepared from a blend of ground beef and pork combined with soaked bread, onions, garlic, and seasonings including Italian herbs and Parmesan. They are gently mixed and shaped into small balls, broiled until cooked through, and then simmered in a combined marinara and tomato sauce. This process results in tender, flavorful meatballs with a rich sauce coating.

Description

The recipe begins by soaking French bread in milk to add moisture and tenderness to the meatball mixture made of ground beef and pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, eggs, and grated Parmesan cheese. The mixture is combined carefully to avoid overworking, ensuring a tender final texture.

Meatballs about one inch in diameter are formed and broiled on a greased sheet pan until cooked through with a light browning. They are then added to a pot with marinara and tomato sauce to simmer gently, allowing flavors to meld and the meatballs to soak up the sauce, enriching their taste and moisture.

Finishing with chopped parsley provides a fresh contrast. This dish serves as a classic Italian-style entree, commonly enjoyed with pasta or crusty bread to complement the savory meatballs and sauce.

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 egg
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • cooking spray
  • 28 ounce jar marinara sauce
  • 8 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons parsley chopped

Instructions

  1. Place the bread and milk in a large bowl; let stand for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the beef, pork, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, eggs and parmesan cheese to the bowl.
  3. Gently stir everything together until it's just combined. You can add a little more milk, 1 teaspoon at a time, if needed to make the ingredients blend better.
  4. Form the meat mixture into 1 inch balls - do not roll them too tightly!
  5. Preheat the broiler. Coat a sheet pan with cooking spray. Arrange the meatballs on the sheet pan.
  6. Broil for 8-10 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through.
  7. Place the meatballs in a pot on the stove over medium heat along with the marinara sauce and tomato sauce. Stir to combine.
  8. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or longer if you have the time. Sprinkle with parsley, then serve.
