Jamaica Drink (Jamaica Agua Fresca) Recipe
Description
This recipe for Jamaica Drink, also known as Agua de Jamaica, begins by simmering dried hibiscus flowers in water to extract their vibrant color and tart flavor. After a brief boil, the mixture is removed from heat before sugar is stirred in until dissolved, sweetening the naturally tangy infusion. Additional water is added to reach desired concentration, and the drink is strained to remove the flower solids. Cooling the mixture, preferably overnight, lets the flavors meld and the drink chill thoroughly.
The resulting beverage is bright red, fruity, and tart with a balance of sweetness. It is traditionally served cold over ice, making it a popular refreshment in warm climates. Variations include making a concentrate by omitting the final water addition to store for longer and diluting with sweeteners like stevia for lower calorie options. Proper storage involves refrigeration in airtight containers, keeping freshness for days.
Ingredients
- 2 cups dried jamaica flowers also known as hibiscus or flor de Jamaica
- 16 cups water
- 1 cup sugar
Instructions
- In a large pot, place the 2 cups of dried Jamaica and 8 cups of water.
- Over medium high heat, bring it to a soft boil for 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat.
- Add the sugar and stir well until all of the sugar is dissolved.
- Add the remaining of the water and let it cool (I let mine sit overnight covered on my counter since I like it to have a strong flavor!)
- Strain. Taste for sugar and water and add more if necessary.
- Refrigerate until ready to use. Serve over ice.
Notes
- Store the prepared drink in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- It can be served over ice to enhance refreshment.
- For longer storage, make a concentrate version by omitting the final addition of water and refrigerate up to 1 month.
- To reduce sugar, substitute with calorie-free sweeteners like stevia or truvia.
- Jamaica Drink is made from dried Hibiscus sabdariffa flowers, also called flor de Jamaica.
