Kachumber - Indian Salad Recipe

Kachumber is a fresh Indian salad combining chopped cucumber, tomato, and red onion with a light seasoning of salt, cumin, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice. The ingredients are mixed after allowing the cucumber and tomatoes to release some juice, then drained to avoid excess wateriness. The salad is crisp and tangy, enhanced by the optional fresh cilantro and mint for added aroma. This raw salad makes a refreshing accompaniment to Indian meals or can be enjoyed on its own for a light side dish.

Description

The Kachumber Indian Salad Recipe uses simple, fresh vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, and red onions that are prepared to maintain their crunch and juiciness. The cucumbers and tomatoes are salted and left to soften slightly before draining excess liquid. Red onions are rinsed briefly to soften their sharpness. Ground cumin and cayenne pepper give the salad a subtle warmth, balanced by bright lemon juice. Optional herbs like cilantro and mint add fresh herbal notes.

Its texture is crisp and lightly juicy, with a balance of tangy lemon and mild spices. This combination allows the raw, fresh vegetables to shine through, making it an ideal palate cleanser or side for richer dishes.

Kachumber is typically served immediately after mixing to maintain crispness. It complements Indian curries well by providing a fresh contrast in texture and flavor.
