Kentucky Chocolate Walnut Pie

Kentucky Chocolate Walnut Pie features a flaky pie crust filled with a mixture of coarsely chopped walnuts and semisweet chocolate chips. The filling combines brown and granulated sugars, flour, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and a pinch of salt, creating a dense, rich custard that sets firmly on baking. The pie bakes at a moderate temperature to ensure the filling cooks through evenly without overbaking the crust.

Description

The Kentucky Chocolate Walnut Pie is prepared by layering chopped walnuts and semisweet chocolate chips in a raw pie crust. The filling, made from combined sugars, flour, melted salted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt, is whisked together until smooth and poured over the nuts and chocolate. Baking at 325°F allows the custard-style filling to firm up without burning the crust edges. The pie is done when the center is set and no longer jiggles, with potential use of foil to protect the crust during baking. Cooling the pie for two hours before slicing ensures it holds its shape well during serving.

This dessert combines the crunch and slight bitterness of walnuts with the sweetness and melting texture of chocolate chips, creating a rich, textured pie filling inside the buttery crust. It can be served as a decadent finish to a meal or at special occasions where nut and chocolate lovers appreciate the combination.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 unbaked [pie crust]

Filling

  • 1 1/4 cups walnuts coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup butter melted and cooled, salted
  • 2 egg lightly beaten, large
  • 2 Tablespoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare and roll out a pie crust, then transfer it to a 9-inch pie plate. Trim and crimp the edges of the crust.
  2. Add the chopped walnuts and chocolate chips to the pie shell.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and salt, then pour into the pie crust over the chocolate chips and nuts.
  4. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until the pie is looking set and doesn't jiggle on top. You may need to cover the edges of the crust with a pie guard or foil if it is browning too much before the middle looks done.
  5. Cool for 2 hours before slicing and serving.
