Key Lime Pie

Key Lime Pie combines a crumbly graham cracker crust with a tangy, creamy filling made from sweetened condensed milk, fresh lime juice and zest, and sour cream. The pie delivers a refreshing balance of sweet and tart flavors with a smooth texture. It’s baked briefly to set the filling without browning and chilled before serving, making a cool, citrusy dessert that highlights the distinctive flavor of key limes or regular limes as a substitute.

Description

The pie crust is crafted by mixing graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter, pressed into a pie plate and pre-baked until set and lightly firm. The filling comprises sweetened condensed milk, freshly squeezed lime juice and zest, and sour cream combined to create a velvety mixture. This filling is poured into the cooled crust and baked just long enough to thicken, taking care not to brown the surface.

After cooling to room temperature, the pie requires refrigeration to chill and fully set, enhancing its creamy texture. The mingling of the creamy sweetened milk and sour cream with bright lime juice results in a balanced dessert with a pleasant tartness. The graham cracker crust provides a slightly sweet, crispy base that contrasts with the smooth filling.

Traditionally, the pie is served chilled, often topped with whipped cream for added richness. It can be made with key limes for authentic flavor or regular limes as a practical substitute. The short bake time preserves the filling’s delicate texture and fresh flavor.
