Kool-Aid Taffy (Homemade Taffy)

Kool-Aid Taffy is a homemade candy that combines granulated sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, butter, and water cooked to the hard-ball stage, then flavored with vanilla extract and unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix. Once cooked and poured onto a pan, it cools before being pulled or cut into pieces, yielding a sweet, chewy taffy with vibrant fruit flavors from the drink mix.

Description

This homemade taffy recipe starts by cooking a mixture of sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, water, and butter to 250 degrees Fahrenheit, the point where the candy reaches a firm but chewy texture. After removing it from heat, vanilla extract and Kool-Aid packets in any flavor are stirred in to give the candy a distinctive color and taste based on the chosen flavor.

The mixture is spread into a prepared pan and allowed to cool for about 20 minutes. Traditionally, the taffy is then pulled until it lightens in color and gains a chewy texture, though it can also be cut into squares as an alternative. Wrapping pieces in parchment paper keeps them fresh.

Stored in an airtight container, this candy keeps well and showcases a nostalgic treat that can be customized with different Kool-Aid flavors.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/3 cups water
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 envelopes drink mix unsweetened (any flavor, Kool-Aid

Instructions

  1. Line a 17x11x1 jelly roll pan with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Grease with cooking spray.
  2. In a large saucepan, add in sugar and cornstarch. Mix until there are no lumps of cornstarch.
  3. Add in corn syrup, water, and butter. Heat over medium/high heat to 250 degrees. Stir occasionally until the mixture comes up to a boil. As soon as the mixture is boiling, don't stir anymore.
  4. Remove from heat once the mixture is up to 250 degrees. Add in the vanilla and kool-aid mix and stir. I divided the mixture in half and used two different kinds of kool-aid drink mix.
  5. Spread onto the jelly roll pan and let cool for 20 minutes. I let the two different flavors run into each other.
  6. After it's cooled, rip off pieces of the taffy and pull it until it lightens in color. I skipped this process and cut mine into squares with a pizza cutter. I rolled mine up and flattened the ends. Cut small squares of parchment paper and rolled the taffy inside.
  7. Store in an air-tight container.
