Korean Style Rice Porridge (Ssal-Mium)

Korean Style Rice Porridge (Ssal-Mium) uses short or medium grain rice blended with water, boiled briefly, then simmered to a soft, smooth consistency. The porridge is sieved for texture and cooled before serving, resulting in a gentle, mild rice dish that can be adjusted in thickness depending on water volume.

Description

Ssal-Mium is prepared by first rinsing and soaking the rice to loosen the grains, which helps yield a smoother porridge. After soaking, the rice and measured water are blended until broken down. This rice-water mixture is boiled for a short time and then simmered on low heat while being stirred often to prevent sticking. The porridge is then strained through a sieve to remove any solids, producing a fine, pureed texture.

The final product is a light, comforting rice porridge with a subtly creamy texture, free of grainy lumps and easy on the palate. Its mildness suits those who prefer a simple, gentle dish and works well as a light breakfast or soothing meal when digestion needs care.

This porridge can be stored in portioned containers and cooled before eating. Adjusting the amount of water used can make the porridge thicker or thinner to suit personal preference or serving intention.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 Tbsp white rice , short / medium grain
  • 1 Cup water , you can reduce this if you want to make it a bit thicker porridge

Instructions

  1. Wash/Rinse the rice in cold running water a couple of times. Soak the rice in some water for about 30 mins then drain the water off.
  2. Pour 1 cup of water on the rice then pour the mixture into a blender. Blend it.
  3. Pour the rice water from step 2 into a sauce pan. Boil it for about 2 mins on high heat then reduce the heat to low and simmer it for about 3 mins. (While it is boiling, stir it often so the rice doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.)
  4. Sieve through the boiled porridge. (Discard what is left on the sieve).
  5. Cool it down for 10 to 20 mins then serve it. (You can save some for later in a portioned container for later consumption.)
