Magic Coconut Bars

Magic Coconut Bars layer a crunchy graham cracker crust with a rich topping of coconut flakes, semi-sweet chocolate chips, walnuts, and condensed milk. The crust is baked first to set, then the coconut mixture with chocolate and nuts is spread on top and baked again. This yields a bar with a crumbly base and a sweet, chewy, nutty topping with pockets of melted chocolate. Cooling before cutting helps the bars hold together for serving.

Description

This recipe begins by crushing graham crackers and combining them with flour, salt, brown sugar, baking powder, and melted unsalted butter to form a soft, crumbly dough. This mixture is pressed into a thin layer on a large lined baking sheet and baked for 10 minutes at 350°F to create a crisp crust. Next, a topping is made by mixing coconut flakes, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and chopped walnuts, then drizzling condensed milk over and stirring to combine. This topping is spread over the pre-baked crust and baked for an additional 20 minutes. Once removed from the oven, the bars are cooled to room temperature to set before being cut. The end result is a layered bar featuring a crunchy base and a moist, chewy, sweet topping with chocolate and nut textures.
