Magic Cookie Bars
Description
Starting with a crumbly graham cracker crust mixed with melted butter, this recipe calls for pressing the crust into a baking dish before pouring sweetened condensed milk over it. The bars are then topped evenly with a layer of coconut flakes, chopped pecans, and a combination of chocolate and butterscotch chips for contrasting flavors and textures.
Baked at 350°F until lightly browned, the sweetened condensed milk binds the toppings and crust into a chewy yet crisp bar. Cooling completely before cutting helps the bars hold their shape. The combination of ingredients results in a rich, slightly chewy bar with nutty and sweet notes balanced by the chocolate and butterscotch chips.
These bars are ideal for dessert, potlucks, or casual gatherings where handheld treats are desired. They can be stored chilled and cut easily once cool.
Using parchment or foil to line the pan makes cleanup easier and allows for easier removal of the bars. Chopping pecans ahead of time saves preparation time. You can adjust the chips according to taste, but semi-sweet chocolate balances the other sweetness well.
Ingredients
- 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
- ¾ cup butter melted, unsalted
- 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
- 1 ⅓ cups coconut flakes sweetened or unsweetened
- 1 ⅓ cups pecans chopped
- 1 cup chocolate chips semi-sweet

Notes
- Melt the butter in the baking pan while preheating the oven to reduce dishwashing.
- Line the pan with parchment or foil for easier removal and cleanup.
- Using pre-chopped pecans saves preparation time.
- The bars are best chilled before cutting to hold their shape.
- You may substitute chocolate chips with any preferred variety to adjust sweetness and flavor.
