Make Ahead Mashed Potatoes
Description
The recipe starts by boiling evenly cut potato pieces in boiling water until tender. Once cooked, the potatoes are allowed to steam dry before mashing. This avoids watery mash and helps achieve a fluffy texture. The mashed potatoes can be made smooth or chunky depending on preference. After cooling, they are stored covered in the refrigerator for up to two days.
When ready to serve, butter and cream are gently heated and stirred into the cold mashed potatoes, rejuvenating the creamy texture and warming the dish. Salt and pepper are added to taste at the end, allowing for precise seasoning.
This make-ahead approach suits meal planning by reducing active cooking time on serving day. The recipe notes suggest leaving potato skins on for extra fiber and choosing mashing methods based on texture preference.
Ingredients
- 800 g potato peeled and diced
- 200 ml cream
- 40 g butter
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
Instructions
- Put the chopped potatoes into a pan. Cover in boiling water.
- Bring to the boil again. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.
- Once cooked, return to the hob and let steam dry.
- Mash the potatoes to your desired consistency.
- Leave to cool and transfer to a bowl. Cover tightly and refrigerate. This will keep in the fridge for 2 days.
- When you are ready to serve the potatoes, put the cream and butter into a pan. Gently heat until the butter has melted, about 2 minutes.
- Stir in the potatoes, continuing to heat gently. Season to taste.
Notes
- Cut potatoes into uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
- For creamier mashed potatoes, mash thoroughly; leave slightly chunky if preferred.
- Use a potato masher for texture or a ricer for very smooth results.
- Add salt and pepper after reheating to better control seasoning.
- Leaving skins on is optional and adds fiber while saving preparation time.
