This DIY gluten free falafel mix blends chickpea or fava flour with herbs and spices to create a dry mix that, when combined with water, forms falafel batter ready for frying. The seasoning profile provides traditional falafel flavors suitable for shaping into patties or balls and frying until golden and crisp.

Description

The Make Your Own Gluten Free Falafel Mix consists of dry ingredients: chickpea or fava bean flour, kosher salt, dried parsley, coriander, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and baking powder. The powders are mixed thoroughly and stored until ready to use.

To prepare falafel, water is added to the mix, allowing it to rest to hydrate before shaping into balls or patties. The falafel are then fried in heated light olive oil until lightly browned and cooked through. This method results in crispy exterior falafel with tender interior.

Served traditionally inside pita with tzatziki, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, they are also suitable as an appetizer paired with dips like bleu cheese. The mix is flexible for different shapes and serving applications.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fava flour ground at about 6 clicks to the left of center, or chickpea flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt (or sea salt)
  • 2 ½ tsp parsley (dried)
  • 1 tsp Coriander
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 4 oz water
  • olive oil as needed for frying, light

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together.
  2. Keep sealed in container or plastic bag until ready to use.

To make falafel:

  1. Add 4 ounces of water to the mixture of dry ingredients. Allow to rest for 10 to 20 minutes before forming into patties or balls.
  2. Fry in heated oil for about 3 to 4 minutes until lightly browned. Drain on paper towel.
  3. Serve as desired. I like to eat them in a pita with tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato and sliced cucumber. They're also great as appetizers served with a bleu cheese dip (recipe to come).

Notes

  • The falafel batter can be formed into balls, patties, croquettes, or other shapes as preferred.
