Mango Lassi with Kefir

This Mango Lassi with Kefir is a creamy and tangy smoothie-style drink blending ripe mango and plain milk kefir. Optional honey sweetens the blend while a pinch of cayenne pepper adds a subtle spicy complexity. Served chilled with or without ice cubes, the lassi offers a refreshing dairy-based beverage with a balance of fruity sweetness and fermented tang.

Description

The recipe combines cubed, ripe mango or frozen mango with plain milk kefir, which contributes probiotic cultures and a mild tartness. Blending these together creates a smooth lassi, and honey is added optionally for sweetness according to taste preferences. Including a small pinch of cayenne pepper introduces a gentle heat that contrasts with the mango’s natural fruitiness.

For a colder drink, ice cubes can be blended in or served on the side. The drink is designed to be consumed immediately to enjoy freshness and retain the frothy texture. Mango lassis are adaptable for variations such as substituting cardamom for cayenne for a different flavor twist or mixing in other fruits like strawberries for variety.

This lassi works as a cooling drink on warm days or a light, nutritious refreshment with probiotic benefits. The blend of kefir and mango can complement Indian meals or serve as a wholesome snack beverage.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 Mango very ripe, cubed or 1 cup frozen
  • 1 ½ cups plain milk kefir or coconut milk kefir
  • 1 tablespoon honey optional, to taste
  • cayenne pepper pinch, optional
  • 4 ice optional, cubes

Instructions

  1. Blend mango and kefir together.
  2. Taste, and sweeten to taste with honey if desired.
  3. If using fresh mango, blend ice cubes into for a colder drink.  Alternatively, serve with whole ice cubes.
  4. Serve with a small pinch of cayenne (optional), and drink immediately.
  5. Leftovers / Make Ahead: Smoothies can be stored in the fridge and used within 2-3 days.

Notes

  • The recipe yields two large servings or four smaller ones and can be stored refrigerated for 2-3 days.
  • For a thicker consistency, plain yogurt can be added; use more kefir or milk for a thinner drink.
  • Traditional lassi variations include substituting Greek yogurt and milk for kefir.
  • Substitute cardamom for cayenne if you prefer less heat or add other fruits like strawberries for flavor variations.
