Marshmallow Popcorn Balls
Description
This recipe features regular microwave popcorn that is combined with a smooth mixture of melted butter and miniature marshmallows. After popping and removing unpopped kernels, the butter is melted and the marshmallows are melted into it, creating a cohesive, glossy syrup. The popcorn is stirred into this mixture carefully to coat each piece without crushing it.
Once combined, the sticky mixture is shaped by hand into balls, with a spray of nonstick coating on the hands to prevent sticking. Festive sprinkles can be added on top for a seasonal touch. These balls set to a chewy, soft texture with a contrast between the light popcorn and the sweet marshmallow coating.
The popcorn balls can be served immediately on a plate, in cupcake liners, or packaged in treat bags. They store well in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days, retaining their soft, gooey consistency. The recipe also suggests forming the balls around lollipop sticks or paper straws before setting, turning them into portable treat pops.
Ingredients
- 2 microwave popcorn popped, regular bags
- ½ cup butter unsalted
- 3 cups miniature marshmallows
- ¼ cup Sprinkles Christmas
Instructions
- Pop two bags of popcorn and remove any unpopped kernels.
- Melt 1/2 cup butter in a large pot over low heat until completely melted.
- Add in the marshmallows and turn the heat up to medium low and heat until the marshmallows are completely smooth and melted into the butter.
- Remove the melted marshmallow mixture from the heat and add the popped popcorn. Gently stir the popcorn into the melted marshmallow, folding it in gently so it mixes into the popcorn but doesn’t completely crush the popcorn into pieces!
- Spray your hands with nonstick spray and from a ball of popcorn. Respray your hands as needed. Place the ball onto a piece of parchment paper and sprinkle with holiday sprinkles (optional).
- Repeat with the remaining mixture, forming balls, and adding sprinkles until you have a cookie sheet full of popcorn balls!
- Once popcorn balls have completely set, serve. You can either just put on a plate, put in cupcake liners to serve, or put in treat bags to enjoy later.
Notes
- Remove all unpopped kernels before combining to avoid crunchy bites.
- Form popcorn balls around lollipop sticks or paper straws before setting for treat pops.
- Store airtight at room temperature for up to five days; wrapping individually extends giftability.
- Clean the pot promptly after preparation to simplify cleanup due to sticky residue.
