Mason Jar Ice Cream
Description
This ice cream recipe utilizes an 8-ounce mason jar to blend heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt by shaking until thickened and doubled in volume. Mix-ins such as chocolate chips or crushed cookies are incorporated before shaking for variety. After shaking, the jar is placed in the freezer for two to three hours to reach a soft-serve ice cream texture. This approach allows for easy homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker.
The ingredients combine to produce a creamy and mildly sweet frozen dessert. It is important not to freeze it too long to avoid ice crystals forming, which can affect texture. The vanilla adds aromatic flavor, while the salt balances sweetness.
The ice cream can be scooped out and served with additional toppings of choice. The jar method makes it simple to prepare small, personalized portions. Leftovers should be eaten within a reasonable time as the texture may change.
If the mixture is over-shaken initially, it may turn into whipped cream instead, which can be used as a spread or topping on other foods like toast or bagels. Continuing to shake past that point may produce butter, which can be saved for other uses.
Ingredients
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 Pinch salt
- chocolate chips sprinkles, peanut butter, crushed cookies, etc. (optional)
Instructions
- Pour cream, sugar, vanilla and salt into an 8 ounce mason jar. Add any mix-ins you’re using. Cover the jar with its tight-fitting lid and shake until the ingredients become thick and double in size, about 3 to 4 minutes. You can also use an electric mixer to blend quicker.
- Freeze for 2 to 3 hours until the consistency resembles soft-serve ice cream, being careful not to freeze any longer to avoid ice crystals.
- Scoop out ice cream and serve with your favorite toppings
Notes
- Shake the mixture well until it thickens and doubles in volume before freezing to develop creamy texture.
- Freeze for 2 to 3 hours to achieve soft-serve consistency; avoid freezing longer to prevent ice crystals.
- Optional mix-ins such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, or crushed cookies add texture and flavor.
- If over-shaken, the mixture turns into whipped cream; if overprocessed further, it becomes butter which can be repurposed.
