Matcha Green Tea
Description
Matcha Green Tea involves sifting a measured amount of matcha powder into a tea bowl to ensure smoothness, then whisking it with hot water around 80°C. The whisking motion creates a characteristic frothy layer on top. The powder's fine grind and precise water temperature prevent bitterness and bring out grassy, slightly sweet flavors typical of good matcha.
This preparation can be supplemented by adding additional hot water or steamed milk to produce either a traditional tea or a matcha latte. Sweeteners like honey or maple syrup add a touch of sweetness and balance the natural vegetal notes. The technique requires no heating of the powder itself, preserving the delicate flavors and antioxidants.
Matcha is adaptable to taste and strength; the amount of powder can be modified depending on preference or experience level. Different grades of matcha can influence flavor and color, so experimentation may help find a preferred variety. The frothy texture and vibrant green color provide a distinctive sensory experience.
Ingredients
- ½ teaspoon matcha green tea powder sifted
- ¼ C water about 80°C/176°F, hot

- Use a chashaku (bamboo tea scoop) to add the matcha powder to sieve placed over a chawan (tea bowl).
- Sift the matcha into a chawan (tea bowl) to remove any clumps.
- Pour about ¼ C hot water (about 80°C/176°F, not boiling hot) into the chawan (tea bowl) and gently press the chasen (matcha whisk) against the bottom of the bowl.
- Move the chasen in a zig zag motion until the liquid becomes foamy.
- Or use an electric whisk/frother to froth it up.
- Add additional hot water, or steamed milk of your choice.
- Sweeten with honey, sugar, maple syrup, or sweetener of your choice, to your taste.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of matcha powder to suit your taste or experience level, using less if new to matcha.
- Choose matcha powder grades carefully, as they influence flavor and quality.
- Use water heated to about 80°C (176°F) to prevent bitterness and retain delicate flavor.
