Matcha Thumbprint Cookies

Matcha Thumbprint Cookies feature a tender, buttery base subtly flavored with matcha green tea powder and a fruity jam center. The dough is chilled before baking to preserve shape and maximize texture contrast between the crumbly cookie and soft jam. These cookies bring a unique visual and taste element through the vibrant green color and gentle earthiness of matcha paired with sweet jam.

Description

The cookie dough is made by combining all-purpose flour and matcha powder, which is sifted together before mixing into creamed salted butter and icing sugar. A dash of vanilla adds depth. After forming the dough into balls and creating thumbprint indentations, the dough is chilled for 30 minutes to firm up.

Before baking, a small amount of jam or marmalade is added to each indentation. Baking at 177°C (350°F) for 10-12 minutes produces slightly golden edges while preserving a tender center with the jam filling. After a brief cooling period, cookies are transferred to wire racks to cool fully.

These cookies make a good accompaniment to tea or coffee, combining a mildly sweet flavor with the slight bitterness of matcha and fruity jam.
