Meatball Sliders
Description
Meatball Sliders bring together a batch of meatballs and marinara sauce baked inside soft Hawaiian sweet rolls. The preparation includes layering the bottom halves of the rolls with garlic butter, sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, and meatballs, topping with more cheese and sauce on the roll tops, and finishing with a garlic butter brush. Baking at 350°F melds the flavors, melts the cheese, and softens the rolls slightly. The garlic butter, made with minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, enhances the savory quality of the dish.
The sliders feature a combination of sweet bread and savory fillings, with the meatballs providing a hearty base and the cheese adding creamy richness. The sauce moistens the sliders and contributes tang and spice from the Italian herbs. This dish is suited for gatherings or meals where handheld portions are desirable and can be served warm from the oven.
Substitutions can be made by using pre-made marinara sauce or frozen meatballs instead of homemade versions, enabling flexibility depending on available time and ingredients. Adjust the amount of sauce to preference when layering the sliders. The garlic butter should be brushed evenly but sparingly to maintain balance.
Ingredients
- 1 batch meatballs homemade
- 1 batch marinara sauce batch, quick
- 2 packages Hawaiian sweet rolls 12 count each
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- ½ cup Parmesan Cheese fresh or grated
For the Garlic Butter:
- 4 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 1-2 cloves garlic grated or minced
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- pinch salt
- pinch black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Lightly spray the inside of a 9”x13” baking dish with cooking spray. Cutting the rolls in half horizontally as you would a bagel and place the bottoms in the baking dish, setting the tops aside for later.
- Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic, Italian seasoning and a pinch of salt and pepper and heat until fragrant.
- Brush a light layer of the garlic butter on the bottoms of the rolls, followed by about ½ -2/3 cup of marinara sauce, depending on how saucey you want your sliders. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella and parmesan evenly over the sauce.
- Next, add the meatballs. You can either place a whole meatball on each slider bun or you can cut the meatballs in half and distribute them evenly across the rolls. Sprinkle with the rest of the cheese.
- On the cut side of the roll tops, spread another ½ to ⅔ cup of the marinara. Place the tops on the sliders. Brush the top of the sliders with the remaining garlic butter.
- Bake until heated through and the cheese is nice and melty, about 15-20 minutes .
- Serve with the remaining marinara as dipping sauce if desired.
Notes
- You can replace homemade marinara sauce with jarred marinara or pizza sauce for convenience.
- Use thawed, fully cooked frozen meatballs if you prefer not to make them from scratch.
- Adjust the amount of marinara sauce on the sliders to suit your preference for sauciness.
