Mexican 75 (Tequila and Champagne Cocktail)

The Mexican 75 is a sparkling cocktail blending tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar shaken over ice and topped with champagne or sparkling wine. A salted or sugared rim brightens the glass, while a lime wedge garnish adds a fresh citrus note. The cocktail offers a crisp, balanced flavor combining the earthy profile of tequila with the acidity of lime and the effervescence of champagne.

Description

Mexican 75 is a cocktail that starts by salting or sugaring the rim of champagne flutes to complement the drink’s flavors. Silver or reposado tequila is mixed with freshly squeezed lime juice and agave nectar in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shaking chills and dilutes the mixture slightly. After straining into flutes, the drink is topped to about three-quarters full with chilled champagne or sparkling wine, adding bubbles and brightness.

The interplay between tequila’s distinctive agave flavor and the tart lime juice is softened by the sweetness of agave nectar and elevated by champagne’s sparkle. The cocktail is often garnished with a lime twist or wedge for aroma and visual appeal. The salted or sugared rim adds a sensory contrast enhancing each sip.

Using good-quality tequila and freshly squeezed lime juice contributes greatly to the cocktail’s taste. Adding champagne after shaking preserves its carbonation. This drink suits festive occasions and those looking for a tequila-based sparkling cocktail.

  3. Strain and Serve. Strain the tequila mixture between the two flutes and then fill each flute to ¾ full with the Champagne or sparkling wine. Garnish with a twist or wedge of lime and enjoy!

Notes

  • Choose a tequila that you enjoy, as its flavor is prominent in the cocktail.
  • Squeeze fresh limes rather than using bottled juice for better flavor.
  • Always add champagne only after shaking the other ingredients to keep bubbles intact.
  • Shake the cocktail until the shaker feels cold to ensure it is well chilled.
  • Don’t skip salting or sugaring the rim to enhance the overall taste experience.
