Mexican Ground Turkey Taco Meat (15-minute)

This Mexican Ground Turkey Taco Meat uses lean ground turkey cooked with taco seasoning and tomato paste for rich flavor. Brown sugar and apple cider vinegar balance the spice with mild sweetness and acidity. The meat is cooked and simmered until the liquid reduces, producing well-seasoned taco filling versatile for tacos, salads, quesadillas, and more.

Description

The recipe features 93% lean ground turkey browned in a skillet, then combined with water, taco seasoning, and tomato paste to create a flavorful, slightly saucy base. Simmering allows the seasoning to concentrate and the mixture to thicken. Adding brown sugar introduces subtle sweetness, while apple cider vinegar adds a slight tang that rounds out strong seasonings. These steps yield a savory, balanced filling with tender turkey bits mixed with rich spices.

The taco meat is adaptable and can be used in various Mexican-inspired dishes such as tacos, salads, quesadillas, burritos, or taquitos. The cooking time is brief, around 15 minutes total, making it convenient for quick meal prep when a spicy, meat-forward component is desired.

The inclusion of common pantry ingredients and straightforward cooking method makes this recipe an accessible choice to produce flavorful ground turkey meat with a familiar taco seasoning profile.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb. ground turkey 93% lean
  • 1/4 cup water 60g
  • 3 Tbsp taco seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1-2 tsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Grease a skillet and set to medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook for about 4-5 minutes, breaking into small pieces with a meat chopper or wooden spatula as you go until brown.
  2. Add the water, taco seasoning and tomato paste; stir. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for another 5 minutes or until most of the liquid has evaporated.
  3. Stir in brown sugar and apple cider vinegar (these aren't necessary but they help balance out the strong flavors of the taco seasoning and give this taco meat a more well-rounded flavor profile). Let simmer for another minute or two then remove from heat.
  4. Use turkey taco meat for tacos, salads, quesadillas, burritos, taquitos, etc!
