Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mexican Hot Chocolate is a spiced warm drink blending milk, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, chili powder, and bittersweet chocolate. This version balances chocolate richness with gentle heat from chili and cayenne powder, delivering a cozy and subtly spicy beverage perfect for cold days or dessert.

Description

Milk is heated gently with unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and mild chili spices, then combined with melted bittersweet chocolate to create a smooth hot drink. The mixture is heated through without boiling to meld flavors while preserving the creamy texture.

The spiced hot chocolate offers a warm balance of sweetness, chocolate depth, and a hint of spice that can be adjusted by omitting or including cayenne pepper. Optional toppings like marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or a cinnamon stick stir add aroma and extra indulgence.

For a richer version, use whole milk and increase the amount of bittersweet chocolate to enhance creaminess and chocolate intensity.

Ingredients

Servings

For the hot chocolate

  • 2 cups milk (I used 2%)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional - you can omit this if you don't want it too spicy, ground
  • 1 ounce bittersweet chocolate

Optional toppings

  • marshmallows chocolate shavings, cinnamon stick for stirring
  • chocolate
  • cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, add milk, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, chili powder, cayenne pepper (if desired).
  2. Mix together with a whisk, add the bittersweet chocolate and heat until the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is hot, but not boiling.
  3. Divide hot chocolate into 2 mugs and serve with marshmallows, chocolate shavings and a cinnamon stick.

Notes

  • Use whole milk and increase bittersweet chocolate to 2–4 oz for a creamier, thicker hot chocolate.
