Mexican Picadillo Recipe

Mexican Picadillo is a hearty ground beef stew cooked with diced potatoes, tomatoes, and a blend of spices including paprika and Mexican oregano. The recipe simmers the mixture until the potatoes soften and the flavors meld, resulting in a savory dish with a medium heat level adjustable by peppers or chili flakes. It’s commonly served with rice or warmed tortillas, making it a filling and adaptable meal.

Description

The Mexican Picadillo Recipe combines ground beef with diced yellow potatoes, onion, garlic, and chopped tomatoes, seasoned with paprika, cumin, and Mexican oregano. The dish starts by softening the vegetables in olive oil, followed by browning the beef and then simmering with beef stock to develop a rich and slightly spiced flavor profile. The potatoes tenderize and absorb the seasoning during the simmering process.

The finished picadillo has a comforting texture from the tender potatoes and ground meat, with a balance of savory and mildly spicy notes contributed by jalapeno or Serrano peppers. It pairs well served over cooked rice or alongside warm tortillas, with additional sliced peppers, chili flakes, fresh lime juice, and hot sauce offered to customize the spice and acidity to taste.

This recipe’s heat level is moderate by default but can be tailored by adjusting the type or amount of peppers, or by adding your favorite hot sauce. The combination of ingredients also allows for variations including adding olives, raisins, or almonds, following traditional picadillo styles.

You can increase heat by using hotter peppers or adding more chili flakes or hot sauce.Traditional picadillo variations may include ingredients like parsley, blanched almonds, olives, carrots, or raisins.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 ounces potato about 3-4 small, diced, yellow
  • 1 yellow onion chopped, medium
  • 1 jalapeno pepper chopped
  • 1 Serrano pepper chopped (optional, for spicier)
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (you can use other ground meats, like chicken, turkey or pork)
  • 2 tomato chopped, large
  • 3/4 cup beef stock (or use chicken or vegetable stock)
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Mexican oregano
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • rice for serving, cooked rice or warmed tortillas, sliced peppers, fresh lime juice
  • tortillas
  • peppers
  • chili flakes
  • lime
  • hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan to medium heat. Add the potatoes, onion and peppers and cook them down for 5 minutes to soften.
  2. Stir in the garlic and ground beef. Break up the ground beef with a wooden spoon and brown it up for 5 minutes. The meat doesn't need to be cooked all the way through.
  3. Stir in the tomatoes, stock, and seasonings and reduce the heat to simmer.
  4. Simmer for 20 minutes to cook through and let the potatoes soften up.
  5. Serve over cooked rice or with tortillas with extra peppers, spicy chili flakes and lime juice! Don’t forget your favorite hot sauce.

Notes

  • You can adjust the spiciness by selecting milder or hotter peppers or adding chili flakes to your preference.
  • Traditional variations include adding olives, raisins, or almonds to enrich the texture and flavor.
