Michelada

Michelada is a refreshing Mexican beer cocktail mixing lime, chile-lime seasoning, tomato juice, Worcestershire, hot sauce, soy sauce, and cold Mexican beer. The rim of the glass is seasoned with chile-lime for an extra tangy, spicy touch. This lightly spiced drink balances bright, savory, and tangy flavors, complemented by the crispness of the beer. Michelada is ideal for those seeking a flavorful beer-based cocktail with a subtle kick.

Description

The Michelada features a seasoned rim coated with chile-lime seasoning, adding a zesty and mildly spicy crunch with each sip. The drink base blends tomato juice or Clamato, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and soy sauce, delivering a complex mix of umami, tang, and heat. When topped with cold Mexican beer, the ingredients meld into a light, savory cocktail with a bright citrus finish from fresh lime wedges.

This cocktail is commonly served ice-filled in glasses rimmed with seasoning, ideal for warm weather or casual gatherings. It pairs well as a savory refreshment alongside Mexican or grilled foods. Adjusting the hot sauce quantity can tailor its spice level, so it can be mild or have a more pronounced kick depending on preference.

The tomato mixture can be prepared and refrigerated up to three days ahead, making serving quick and easy. Common garnishes include lime wedges or sliced jalapenos for an extra touch of heat and brightness. The cocktail's moderate spice and layered flavors appeal to those who enjoy beer cocktails that go beyond simple mixes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lime wedges, divided
  • ¼ cup chile-lime seasoning such as Tajin
  • 1/2 cup tomato juice or Clamato
  • 2 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce low sodium
  • 24 ounces Mexican beer

Instructions

  1. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass and dip the rim in the chile-lime seasoning.
  2. Combine tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and soy sauce in a measuring cup and stir together.
  3. Fill glasses with ice and add half the tomato juice mixture in each glass.
  4. Top each glass with beer and stir together.
  5. Garnish each drink with a lime wedge. Serve.

Notes

  • Clamato juice can be used instead of tomato juice for a briny, oceanic flavor.
  • The tomato juice blend may be prepared up to 3 days ahead and refrigerated.
  • Adjust the hot sauce amount to control the spice level; omit it entirely for no heat.
  • Garnish with lime wedges or sliced jalapenos to enhance freshness and mild heat.
