Microwave Brussels Sprouts

Report
Microwave Brussels Sprouts are quickly steamed with a small amount of water before being tossed in butter, salt, and pepper. This method produces tender sprouts without overcooking or mushiness. The texture remains firm yet soft, making it a convenient and efficient way to enjoy this vegetable. Variations like adding Parmesan, chili flakes, or soy sauce can enhance the flavor, and they also work well as a topping on noodles.

Description

The Microwave Brussels Sprouts recipe starts by trimming and halving fresh sprouts, then steaming them briefly in a covered bowl with water using the microwave. This quick steaming softens the sprouts while preserving their shape and some firmness. After draining, they are mixed gently with butter, salt, and black pepper, which coats each sprout and adds richness. The cooking time is carefully calibrated to avoid mushy sprouts, with suggestions to adjust times based on your microwave's power.

This preparation yields sprouts that are tender but still maintain texture, making them suitable as a side dish or as an ingredient topping noodles when flavored with soy sauce. The butter and seasoning provide a simple, comforting flavor profile.

For frozen Brussels sprouts, less water and longer cooking times are recommended to prevent overcooking. Adding spices like paprika or cayenne can introduce a smoky or spicy note. It is advised to check doneness incrementally since microwave power varies, ensuring the sprouts do not become too soft.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 500 g Brussels sprouts stalks removed, halved
  • 60 ml water
  • 20 g butter
  • 2 pinch sea salt
  • 2 pinch black pepper

Instructions

  1. Trim the stalks off the sprouts, remove any loose leaves and cut the sprouts in half.
  2. Put the sprouts into a microwave safe bowl. Pour over the water and cover with cling film (saran wrap). Pierce a hole to vent.
  3. Cook in the microwave on high power for 6 minutes.
  4. Remove the sprouts from the microwave and drain.
  5. Return the drained sprouts to a bowl and add the butter, salt and pepper. Mix carefully until the butter has melted and coated all the sprouts.

Notes

  • Adjust the microwave cooking time in 30-second increments starting at 4 minutes to avoid overcooking.
  • When using frozen Brussels sprouts, reduce the water amount and extend cooking time carefully.
  • Enhance flavor with optional additions like Parmesan, red chili flakes, paprika, or a splash of soy sauce.
  • Serve immediately to retain texture and warmth.
