Millionaire Cranberry Salad

Millionaire Cranberry Salad combines sour cream or Greek yogurt, drained pineapple tidbits, miniature marshmallows, chopped pecans, and coconut flakes with a homemade cranberry sauce made by simmering fresh cranberries, sugar, water, and cinnamon. The salad melds creamy, sweet, tart, and crunchy elements into a chilled dish that gains flavor by resting several hours or overnight.

Description

This salad features a base of sour cream or plain Greek yogurt mixed with drained pineapple tidbits, miniature marshmallows, chopped pecans, and coconut flakes. The homemade cranberry sauce is prepared by simmering fresh cranberries with sugar, water, and a cinnamon stick until softened and thickened after cooling.

Only a portion of the cooled cranberry sauce is folded into the salad mixture to balance the tartness. The salad is refrigerated for several hours or overnight, which allows the flavors to meld and the marshmallows to soften, resulting in a texture that contrasts creamy, fruity, crunchy, and chewy elements.

Often served as a festive or holiday side dish, this salad pairs well with main courses that benefit from a tart and sweet complement. Its layered textures and bright cranberry flavor are signature to this traditional preparation.
