Minced Beef and Onions
Description
This recipe starts by slowly sweating chopped onions in olive oil until softened but not browned, preserving their sweetness. Minced beef is then added and cooked until browned for a rich meaty base. A small amount of plain flour is stirred in to form a roux-like base which then thickens the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce added afterwards.
The combination yields a moist, savory mixture with a smooth sauce that clings to the meat. Simmering gently for ten minutes melds flavors without drying the dish. The Worcestershire sauce adds a subtle tang and umami note enhancing the overall taste.
Minced Beef and Onions pairs well with jacket potatoes, mashed potatoes, or a side of steamed vegetables, making a comforting, hearty meal option for lunch or dinner.
If the sauce becomes too thick during cooking or standing, add extra stock to maintain a suitable consistency before serving.
Ingredients
- 500 g minced beef or steak
- 1 onion chopped, large
- 1 tbsp plain flour
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 300 ml beef stock
- 3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
- salt
- black pepper
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan over a medium heat.
- Once hot, sweat the onions over low to medium heat for 10 minutes under a lid, stirring occasionally until softened (not browned).
- Next add the minced beef and fry until browned.
- Sprinkle on the flour and cook for a minute stirring continuously.
- Add the stock, Worcestershire Sauce and seasoning and bring to the boil stirring until thickened.
- Simmer for ten minutes on a low heat.

Notes

- Add extra beef stock if the sauce thickens too much to maintain a moist consistency.
- Serve the finished dish with jacket potatoes, mashed potatoes, or vegetables for a balanced meal.
