M&M Chocolate Bars
Description
M&M Chocolate Bars start with a base of all-purpose flour, quick-cooking rolled oats, light brown sugar, and butter pressed into a baking dish to create a sturdy yet tender crust. A sweet topping made by melting condensed milk, chocolate chips, and butter is poured over the oat base, creating a creamy chocolate layer. The reserved oat mixture adds a crumbly topping, and the bars are finished with a generous topping of plain M&M candies.
Baking at 350°F for 25–30 minutes melds the layers while allowing the oat crust and crumb topping to become crisp and golden. The chocolate layer remains soft and rich, and the M&M’s add texture and bursts of candy sweetness. The combination yields bars that contrast crunchy edges with a gooey center and colorful candy pieces on top.
These bars can be served as a sweet snack or dessert. Their sturdy texture makes them easy to portion and share. They pair well with milk or coffee and work well for gatherings or afternoon treats. The notes indicate several variations in candy and chocolate types are possible for different flavors.
For storage, bars keep on the counter covered for up to three days. They also freeze well for two to three months when tightly wrapped. This flexibility makes them suitable for making ahead or gifting.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1½ cups rolled oats quick-cooking
- 1 cup light brown sugar packed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter softened, divided, unsalted, 2 tablespoons
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (11.5-ounce) bag milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup M&M’s plain
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and 1 cup butter with a spoon. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and set aside.
- Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- In a medium pot, combine condensed milk, chocolate chips, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat. Stir constantly until the chips are melted and everything is mixed well.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over the oat layer and spread evenly. Sprinkle the reserved oat mixture over the chocolate.
- Top with M&M’s and bake for 25–30 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting.
Notes
- Swap M&M’s types or chocolate chips to change the flavor profile (e.g., peanut butter, white chocolate).
- Store bars covered at room temperature for up to three days or freeze wrapped tightly for 2–3 months.
