Monte Cristo Casserole

Monte Cristo Casserole layers slices of French bread with ham, turkey breast, and Swiss cheese, soaked in an egg and milk custard seasoned with Dijon mustard and spices. A crumbly butter, flour, and brown sugar topping adds sweetness and texture. The casserole bakes until set and golden, combining savory meats with a custardy base and a caramelized finish.

Description

This casserole begins by arranging bread slices in a baking dish and layering them with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese. The custard is made by whisking eggs with whole milk, Dijon mustard, sugar, kosher salt, and coarsely ground black pepper, then pouring it evenly over the layered bread and meats to soak through.

The topping combines softened unsalted butter, flour, and packed brown sugar mashed together to form a crumbly mixture sprinkled over the top. Baking at 350°F until the custard is set and the top is golden produces a dish with a tender, moist interior contrasted by a sweet, slightly crisp topping.

Optionally, dusting with powdered sugar and serving with jam complements the rich flavors and highlights the dish’s inspiration from the classic Monte Cristo sandwich. This rich casserole suits breakfast or brunch occasions where a savory-sweet contrast is desired.
