Ms. Bessie's Authentic New Orleans Rum Cake

Ms. Bessie's Authentic New Orleans Rum Cake is a rich yellow cake flavored with chopped pecans and a splash of rum in the batter and finished with a buttery rum glaze. Baked slowly in a tube pan, this cake develops a moist crumb and a golden crust. The rum glaze contributes a sticky, flavorful topping, making it a classic festive dessert with a balanced sweetness and nutty texture.

Description

This Authentic New Orleans Rum Cake recipe begins with a yellow cake mix blended with instant vanilla pudding, chopped pecans, eggs, vegetable oil, water, and rum. The batter is thoroughly mixed and poured into a tube pan lined with pecans, then baked at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour until the cake pulls away from the pan. This slow baking time helps produce a tender, moist crumb with a lightly golden crust.

The glaze is prepared separately by boiling butter, sugar, and water, then stirring in rum before spooning it warm over the cake. This step saturates the cake with rum flavor and creates a shiny, sticky finish that enhances the moist texture and brings a signature richness.

This cake serves well as a festive dessert for celebrations or gatherings, standing out with its nutty notes and warm rum character. The texture combines a tender cake interior with a slightly crisp top and rich glaze. The pecans add a pleasant crunch that contrasts with the softness of the cake.
