Nutella Recipe (Chocolate Hazelnut Spread)
Description
This Nutella recipe begins by roasting raw hazelnuts to deepen their flavor and soften the nuts to facilitate skin removal. Carefully rubbing the toasted nuts in a towel removes the bitter skins. Ground finely in a food processor, the nuts form the base of the spread. Powdered sugar and unsweetened cocoa powder add sweetness and chocolate flavor. Vegetable oil helps achieve a spreadable consistency, while vanilla extract enhances aroma and taste. Chopped chocolate is processed into the mixture for extra richness.
The processing requires scraping the bowl frequently as the mixture thickens before it softens into a smooth, creamy texture. Salt is added to balance and highlight the flavors. The final product is a thick, creamy spread with a nutty and chocolaty profile.
Store the Nutella in an airtight container either at room temperature for up to two weeks or refrigerated for up to three weeks. It can be used as a spread on bread, as a dip for fruit, or in baking recipes that call for chocolate hazelnut spread.
Ingredients
- 1 cup hazelnuts raw
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- ½ cup cocoa powder unsweetened
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
- ¼ cup chocolate chopped
- ⅛ teaspoon salt to taste, sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Place the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, stirring halfway through.
- Allow them to cool slightly before handling. Once cooled, place them in a towel and gently rub the nuts until the skins come off— this should take about 5 minutes.
- Place the hazelnuts in a food processor and pulse until they resemble finely ground coffe, about 10-15 pulses.
- Add in the powdered sugar, cocoa, vegetable oil, vanilla, and chopped chocolate and process until it is smooth and creamy, about 5 minutes. The mixture will become thick before it becomes smooth and creamy— just keep scraping down the sides of the bowl and processing and it will come together. Add salt to taste.
Notes
- Store Nutella in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or refrigerate up to 3 weeks.
- Use dark chocolate and special dark cocoa powder for a richer dark chocolate flavor if desired.
- Be sure to scrape down the food processor bowl regularly during processing to achieve a smooth texture.
- Add vanilla extract to enhance the flavor complexity of the spread.
