Nutter Butter Turkey Cookies
Description
The recipe uses Nutter Butter sandwich cookies as the base to represent the turkey's body. Red frosting acts as edible glue for placing candy eyes and candy corn beaks, which are trimmed and strategically positioned. Small dots of frosting create a gobble effect beside the beak. Pretzels dipped in melted semi-sweet chocolate become the turkey’s tail feathers when arranged behind the cookie in a fan shape.
This hands-on decoration process yields a crunchy-textured cookie with creamy peanut butter filling alongside sweet and crisp chocolate-pretzel feathers. The method relies on the frosting for detailed facial features and offers a visually appealing seasonal dessert or snack. The dipping and decorating stages are suitable for involving children, enhancing the experience with teamwork and creativity.
Chilling the completed cookies preserves the chocolate coating and prevents melting, important for display and transport. Leftover cookies store in an airtight container refrigerated for up to five days but are not recommended for freezing due to texture changes.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp frosting red
- 8 cookies Nutter Butter brand
- 16 small Candy eyes
- 8 candy corn brown and orange candy corn, chocolate flavor
- 1 tsp vegetable oil
- 12 oz chocolate chips semi-sweet
- 32 pretzels mini
- 3 tbsp orange sprinkles
Instructions
- Place the red frosting into a zip-top bag with the corner cut off or a piping bag with a small round tip.
- Using the frosting as glue, pipe two little dots on the top of the Nutter Butter cookies and place a candy eye onto each little dot.
- Next, to make the turkey’s beak, cut off the brown part of the candy corn and make a little vertical line just below the eyes and place the candy corn onto the frosting with the orange side down.
- Use the red frosting again and make a vertical line on either the left or right side of the turkey’s beak.
- Start by lining 2-3 baking sheets or cutting boards or other flat moveable surfaces (charcuterie boards work too) with parchment paper.
- In a medium safe bowl combine the oil and the chocolate chips. Microwave in 20 second increments making sure to stir well between each increment. Repeat until chocolate is smooth.
- To make the turkey’s tail, dip each mini pretzel into the melted chocolate and place four mini pretzels in a half circle on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- While the chocolate pretzels are still melted, place the Nutter Butter with the turkey’s face up over ends of the chocolate-coated pretzels.
- Quickly sprinkle the tail with orange sprinkles while the chocolate is still melted on the pretzels.
- Place the baking sheets with the turkey cookies in the fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow the chocolate to set completely.
- Serve chilled or at room temperate.
Notes
- Keep decorated cookies refrigerated to prevent chocolate melting and decoration shifting.
- Use very small pretzels to fit four around each cookie and closely mimic feathers.
- Chocolate coating on pretzels should be melted carefully in short intervals to avoid burning.
- Children can participate by applying frosting, placing eyes, and assisting with pretzel dipping.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days; freezing is not advised.
