Oatmeal Carmelitas
Description
This recipe combines quick cooking oats, all-purpose flour, and packed brown sugar mixed with melted butter to create an oat crust and topping with a crisp yet tender bite. Half of this oat batter is pressed into the pan to form the base. Semisweet chocolate chunks are scattered over the crust, followed by a layer of warmed caramel sauce made by melting unwrapped caramels with milk in the microwave until smooth.
The oat mixture is sprinkled over the caramel for a textured topping. After baking at 350°F for 20 to 25 minutes, the bars develop a golden-brown topping and a chewy, dense, and sweet profile with caramel pockets and chocolate pieces melted underneath. Cooling completely before cutting allows the caramel to set for cleaner slices.
