Old Fashioned Apple Pie

Apple Pie Filling

  • 6 cups apple red delicious or gala, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon cloves ground
  • teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Apple Pie Crust

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • cup shortening
  • 4 tablespoons water cold
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Place apple slices into a large bowl and stir in lemon juice.
  3. Blend 2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and shortening until it feels like small peas.
  4. Add COLD water and blend until the dough starts sticking together.
  5. Divide the dough in half and place half on a floured surface
  6. Roll out the dough for the bottom crust. Take care and do not overwork the dough or it will get tough and will not be tender.
  7. Place the rolled out pie crust in the bottom of a pie plate.
  8. To the sliced apples, add sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, salt, and 2 tablespoons flour. Stir to coat apples.
  9. Place the apples in the bottom pie crust.
  10. Top apples with sliced butter.
  11. Roll out the remainder of the dough and place it on top of the apples. Seal the edges.
  12. Brush the top of the crust lightly with milk and sprinkle with cinnamon and granulated sugar.
  13. Cut a few 1-inch slices in the top crust to vent it while baking.
  14. Bake for 50 minutes or until done.
