Old-Fashioned Banana Cake:

  • 3 banana mashed, very ripe
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 egg room temperature, extra-large
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • orange zest from 1
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 6 oz cream cheese at room temperature
  • 6 tbsp butter softened at room temperature, unsalted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar sifted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9-inch springform cake pan.
  2. Make the cake by beating together the bananas, white sugar, and brown sugar with a mixer until combined.
  3. Add the oil, eggs, sour cream, vanilla, and orange zest; beat until creamy and smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; mix well.
  5. Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture and mix with a rubber spatula until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  7. Place into the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a wooden skewer is inserted in the center and comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for 15 minutes before moving it to a rack to cool completely.
  9. Make the frosting when the cake has completely cooled by combining the cream cheese, softened butter, and vanilla extract.
  10. Beat with a mixer until creamy and smooth.
  11. Add the sifted powdered sugar and mix with a rubber spatula making sure to scrape the sides of the bowl.
  12. Spread the frosting thickly on top of the cake and decorate the top with walnut halves. Slice and enjoy!
