Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Cake

Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Cake pairs a cocoa-flavored cake batter topped with a brown sugar and cocoa topping that melts into a soft, pudding-like layer during baking. The texture combines a moist cakey base with a syrupy, deeply chocolatey topping, accented by chopped nuts for added crunch. This recipe is baked as a single-layer 8x8-inch pan offering a warm dessert that balances sweetness and rich chocolate notes, ideal for serving with whipped cream to enhance its creamy finish.

Description

The Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Cake brings together a simple batter made from flour, cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla, milk, and nuts that forms a tender chocolate cake. After pouring the topping mixture of brown sugar and cocoa over the batter and adding hot water, the cake bakes to create a distinct two-layer effect where the bottom remains cakey and the top transforms into a luscious chocolate pudding.

This combination results in a dessert that features moist crumb and syrupy, sweet pudding layers, accented by the texture from nuts mixed into the batter. The warm cake serves well with a dollop of whipped cream, which complements the rich chocolate flavor and adds a light, creamy contrast.

Because the pudding topping forms in the pan during baking, serving is best when the cake is warm. The method requires no unusual ingredients or techniques, relying on pantry staples and basic baking steps, making it accessible for a home cook wanting a classic chocolate dessert that showcases both cake and pudding textures.
