Old Fashioned Freezable Apple Crisp

This classic apple crisp features thinly sliced apples topped with a crumbly blend of flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg, all baked together to create a warm dessert that combines tender fruit with a golden, crispy topping. It can be prepared ahead and frozen for convenient baking later.

Description

The Old Fashioned Freezable Apple Crisp starts with thinly sliced apples, which soften and bubble as they bake beneath a substantial crumb topping made from a mixture of flour, packed brown sugar, old fashioned oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, and melted butter. This topping crisps up to a golden brown and contrasts nicely with the tender, cooked apples beneath. The apple slices can be peeled or left unpeeled, and a variety of apple types can be used for different flavor profiles.

Baked uncovered at 350°F for 35 to 45 minutes, the dessert is best served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of salted caramel sauce to complement the sweet and spiced elements. The crisp topping may look abundant before baking but will settle to a balanced layer as it cooks.

For convenience, the crisp can be assembled in advance and refrigerated for up to three days before baking. To prevent apple browning before cooking, the sliced apples can be soaked briefly in a saltwater solution, then drained and stored separately from the topping. This preparation allows for later baking while maintaining the recipe's texture and flavor quality.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups brown sugar firmly packed
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup butter melted
  • 3 cups apple Golden Delicious, Granny Smith or other varieties, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon and nutmeg together until well combined.
  3. Pour in the melted butter and stir using a spoon (or your hands) until it comes together and starts crumbling into smaller pieces. Set aside.
  4. Thinly slice your apples (I like using my trusty apple-peeler-corer-slicer device, but a knife will work too). You can keep the peels on or remove them, either way works.
  5. Lightly grease your 8x8 pan using cooking spray or butter.
  6. Place apples in pan then sprinkle toppings over apples. It will seem like there is too much crumb topping as it can heap over the top, however it will bake down and be just perfect.

Make It Now

  1. Bake uncovered for 35-45 minutes, or until crisp topping is golden brown and you can see or hear the cooked apples bubbling inside. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes then serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and optionally some salted caramel sauce.

Freeze It

  1. After adding the apple crisp topping over apples, cover with several layers of plastic wrap. Then cover with foil. Write the cooking directions on the foil and freeze.

To Cook From Frozen

  1. Simply remove frozen apple crisp from freezer, remove plastic wrap and foil, replace foil.
  2. Bake covered in 350°F oven for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for remaining time of 40-55 minutes or until crisp topping is golden brown and you can see or hear the cooked apples bubbling inside. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes then serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and optionally some salted caramel sauce.

Notes

  • You can prepare and refrigerate the crisp up to 3 days before baking for convenience.
  • Soaking apple slices in cold water with salt helps prevent discoloration before baking.
  • Thinly slicing the apples ensures they cook through and become tender during baking.
  • Varieties like Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, or Braeburn work well depending on desired tartness.
  • Serving warm with vanilla ice cream or salted caramel sauce enhances the dessert experience.
