Old-Fashioned Lunch Lady Brownies
Description
This recipe starts by combining melted butter and unsweetened cocoa powder, creating a chocolate base. Flour and sugar are then mixed in, followed by eggs and vanilla extract to form a thick batter that provides structure and moisture. The batter is baked in a 9x13 pan until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, ensuring a fully cooked yet tender brownie.
The frosting combines softened butter, milk, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar, whipped until smooth and spreadable. It is applied to warm but not hot brownies, which helps frosting set properly when cooled. The final brownies feature a dense, moist crumb with a creamy chocolate frosting layer, evoking a nostalgic, classic dessert style reminiscent of cafeteria brownies.
The recipe yields a generous pan of brownies and is well suited for sharing or making ahead. Cooling is important before slicing to maintain clean edges and a tidy presentation.
