Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler

Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler features fresh peeled peach slices cooked with sugar and lemon juice, topped with a thin batter that bakes into a golden crust. The peaches provide a tender, juicy filling with subtle citrus brightness, while the batter offers a soft, lightly sweetened topping. This comforting dessert can be served warm or cooled and accepts substitutions like frozen fruit or additional apples or mangoes.

Description

The Old Fashioned Peach Cobbler begins by cooking fresh peeled and sliced peaches with sugar and lemon juice until softened and juicy, forming a flavorful fruit base. Meanwhile, the batter combines flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and sugar to create a thin batter that is poured over melted butter in the baking dish. The peach mixture is then spooned over the batter without stirring.

During baking at 375°F, the batter rises and cooks to a golden brown crust around the peaches, creating a contrast in texture between the tender fruit and soft cake-like topping. The lemon juice adds a subtle brightness that balances the sweetness of the peaches and sugar.

This peach cobbler is well suited to serving warm or cooled and pairs with cream or vanilla ice cream if desired. It offers a taste of traditional Southern-style cobbler with straightforward ingredients.

The recipe allows for using frozen peaches if fresh are unavailable; these should be cooked until soft before layering. Other fruits like apples or mango can be added or substituted for variation. Sugar amounts can be reduced slightly to adjust sweetness. The thinness of the batter is normal and will bake up properly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ¼ cup butter unsalted
  • 1 cup sugar divided, granulated white
  • 5 peach peeled and sliced, fresh
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375° Fahrenheit.
  2. Once oven is preheated, melt butter in a 9- x 9-inch baking dish.
  3. While butter is melting, bring ¼ cup sugar, peach slices, and lemon juice to a boil over high heat, stirring constantly until softened and juice is extracted from peaches (about 5 minutes). Set to the side.
  4. Using a stand mixer, combine flour, ¾ cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Then, add milk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened. Pour batter over hot butter pan (do not stir). Then pour peach mixture over batter (do not stir).
  5. Bake at 375° Fahrenheit for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Serve cobbler warm or cool.

Notes

  • Frozen peaches may be substituted but should be cooked until soft as directed before assembling.
  • Additions like mango or apple can complement or substitute peaches, with apples cooked in the sauce pan and mango added just before baking.
  • Adjust sugar in the batter to taste; reducing from ¾ cup to ½ cup can lessen sweetness.
  • The batter is thin initially but bakes into a tender topping, so do not be alarmed by its consistency before baking.
