Old Fashioned Snowball Cookies
Description
These cookies begin with creaming salted butter and sugar, then adding vanilla extract and optionally water for moisture. Flour is sifted and combined into the batter, followed by chopped pecans that add texture and nutty flavor. The dough is chilled for two hours to help maintain shape during baking.
The chilled dough is rolled into 1-inch balls and baked at 325°F for 20 minutes until set. After cooling slightly on a wire rack, the cookies are rolled in confectioners sugar, giving them their characteristic snowy appearance and a light sweetness.
The cookies are dense and tender, with a crumbly mouthfeel from the nuts and buttery base. They are suitable for tea time or holiday treats and can be customized with different nuts or flavorings such as almond extract or cocoa powder.
For best results, keep the dough cool between batches to ensure the cookies stay round during baking. Variations include adding mini chocolate chips or swapping nuts. This recipe yields a classic cookie with nostalgic appeal.
