Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
Description
The Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies recipe combines softened butter and granulated sugar creamed together to create a light base. Eggs, milk, and vanilla extract add moisture and flavor, while the baking powder and salt in the flour mix help the cookies rise gently and balance sweetness. After chilling the dough for a couple of hours, the dough is portioned into balls and flattened with a sugar-dipped glass to give a slight sparkle and subtle crisp edge. Baked moderate golden brown, these cookies develop a delicate crumb with a tender bite.
The finished cookies carry a gentle sweetness and buttery richness with a hint of vanilla, making them versatile for everyday treats or holiday baking. They can be served on their own or alongside drinks. The dough's firmness after chilling aids in easy handling and even baking. Cooling on racks after a short rest on the baking sheet ensures they finish crisping without overbaking.
No additional tools or complex techniques are required, making this recipe approachable for home bakers. Following the method carefully results in consistently soft, flavorful sugar cookies that evoke a classic homemade appeal.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened at room temperature
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 egg at room temperature, large
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 Tbsp milk
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Beat together the butter and sugar with a hand held mixer or a stand up mixer. Then add in the eggs, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder and salt.
- Then gradually stir the dry ingredients (flour mixture) into the wet ingredients (butter mixture) until a dough forms. Cover and chill the dough for at least 2 hours.
- Then preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Use a teaspoon or cookie scoop to drop the cookie dough onto a prepared baking sheet into round balls. Flatten the cookie dough out slightly by using the bottom of a glass dipped in granulated sugar.
- Then bake for 12-15 minutes until the cookies are slightly golden brown. Make sure to rotate the baking sheets halfway through the baking time to ensure that the cookies are baked evenly.
- Let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Then move the cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
