Olive Garden Alfredo Sauce

This recipe recreates the creamy Alfredo sauce found at Olive Garden using heavy cream, butter, garlic puree, and Parmesan cheese. The sauce thickens gently over heat to coat cooked pasta, resulting in a rich, velvety texture. Subtle garlic flavor is balanced by the sharpness of the Parmesan, providing a satisfying sauce perfect for pasta dishes.

Description

The Olive Garden Alfredo Sauce combines heavy cream and butter cooked with garlic puree to infuse flavor before stirring in Parmesan cheese to thicken the sauce. Cooking over medium heat allows gentle bubbling that melds the dairy and cheese into a seamless, creamy sauce. When combined with properly cooked pasta, it clings smoothly, offering a luxurious mouthfeel without being overly heavy.

This sauce works primarily as a coating for pasta, particularly fettuccine or similar shapes, making a classic comfort dish. It can be adjusted with salt and pepper to taste, and additional Parmesan can be sprinkled on top when serving for extra richness.

Adding cream cheese can increase thickness if desired, and some prefer to omit garlic or add ground white pepper according to preference. Although Olive Garden does not include nutmeg, a small amount is a common addition in homemade versions for warmth.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces butter
  • 1 1/2 cups Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic puree or garlic powder
  • 1 pound pasta cooked according to package directions

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to the package directions.
  2. In a saucepan, cook garlic puree, in butter over medium heat. Add the cream once the garlic becomes fragrant.
  3. When the butter and cream become bubbly, add Parmesan cheese, and stir.  Turn up the heat slightly and continue to stir.  The sauce will thicken.
  4. In a large bowl combine cooked pasta and Alfredo sauce.   Stir well, and serve.   Season with salt and pepper if desired.

Notes

  • Add 2 tablespoons of cream cheese if you prefer a thicker sauce.
  • The garlic may be omitted if a milder flavor is desired.
  • Ground white pepper complements the sauce well as a seasoning option.
  • A small amount of nutmeg can be added for warmth, though not used in the restaurant version.
