One Bowl Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg large
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup buttermilk see note
  • ½ cup water hot

Frosting

  • ¼ cup butter unsalted
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder unsweetened
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • cups powdered sugar sifted
  • Sprinkles optional, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8x8 cake pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  3. Add egg, oil, buttermilk and hot water and beat until the batter is smooth.
  4. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 26-28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Frosting

  1. Melt butter in a medium pot over low heat. Add cocoa powder, milk and vanilla and whisk until smooth. Add powdered sugar and whisk until smooth.
  2. Remove from the heat and pour over the warm cake. Spread frosting quickly and add sprinkles right away, since frosting sets up quickly.

Notes

  • How to Make Buttermilk using milk and vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Cupcakes. Divide the batter into cupcakes, about ¾ of the way full, and bake for 15-18 minutes.
