One pan Baked Chicken with Garlic Parmesan Cream Sauce

This baked chicken recipe pairs bone-in chicken thighs with a rich garlic Parmesan cream sauce made in a single skillet. After seasoning and searing the chicken, a creamy sauce with butter, garlic, Italian seasoning, chicken broth, flour, Parmesan, and heavy cream is prepared in the same pan. The chicken finishes baking atop the sauce, resulting in juicy meat with a crispy skin and a thick, flavorful sauce. It's a comforting dinner option where the sauce can also be spooned over sides like pasta or vegetables.

Description

One pan Baked Chicken with Garlic Parmesan Cream Sauce starts by seasoning bone-in chicken thighs with Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, then searing them in butter until golden brown. The pan is then used to make a garlic Parmesan cream sauce by sautéing minced garlic in butter, adding Italian seasoning and flour, and whisking in chicken broth, heavy cream, and Parmesan cheese until thickened. The seared chicken is returned to the skillet, nestled into the sauce, and baked at 375°F until cooked through and the skin crisps.

The sauce balances creamy, cheesy richness from Parmesan and heavy cream with savory garlic and Italian herbs. Baking the chicken in the sauce helps it stay moist while infusing it with flavor. The crispy skin contrasts with the tender meat and smooth sauce. Although the recipe uses chicken thighs, chicken breasts can be substituted with shorter baking times.

This one-pan method simplifies cleanup and makes preparing the cream sauce straightforward. For a lighter variation, half & half can replace heavy cream without drastically changing the texture. The dish pairs well with steamed vegetables, rice, or pasta to take advantage of the sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lbs chicken thigh 6-8 pieces, bone-in
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the Garlic Parmesan Cream Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • salt to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground
  • black pepper to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Season chicken with Italian seasoning, salt & pepper. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium - high heat. Add chicken, skin-side down, and sear both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side; remove chicken from skillet and set aside. Prep cream sauce in the same skillet.

To make the garlic parmesan cream sauce:

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Add garlic, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add italian seasoning and flour. Whisk lightly browned, about 1 minute. Whisk in chicken broth until fully incorporated with flour. Gradually whisk in heavy cream and Parmesan until slightly thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Return chicken into the skillet, on-top of the parmesan cream sauce. Bake in pre-heated oven for 30-35 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and skin is crispy. Garnish with fresh herbs or parmesan cheese. Serve with rice, veggies, or a salad. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Chicken breasts can replace thighs; reduce baking time accordingly to avoid overcooking.
  • Using half & half instead of heavy cream creates a lighter sauce with similar flavor.
