One Pan Cabbage and Kielbasa
Description
One Pan Cabbage and Kielbasa brings together sliced kielbasa sausage and chopped green cabbage as main components, flavored with minced garlic, chopped onion, and a touch of red wine vinegar. The kielbasa is first browned to develop a crisp exterior, then set aside while onions and garlic soften. Adding cabbage allows it to wilt gently, marrying with the vinegar and olive oil. The dish is finished by seasoning with smoked paprika and salt, enhancing its smoky and savory notes.
The flavor is a blend of smoky sausage richness contrasted with the tangy acidity of red wine vinegar. The texture features soft cabbage with slight browning, paired with firm, browned kielbasa slices. Cooking all ingredients in one pan simplifies preparation and intensifies flavors through shared cooking juices.
Serve this as a practical main dish or side, suited for casual meals that benefit from a smoky, tangy, and savory profile. It pairs well with simple accompaniments such as boiled potatoes or crusty bread to soak up the juices.
Notes suggest that substituting yellow onion or red cabbage is possible, as well as swapping kielbasa for other smoked, cooked sausages. White wine vinegar can replace red for a milder vinegar flavor. These options allow for adjustments based on ingredient availability without significantly changing the dish's character.
Ingredients
- 12 oz kielbasa 1 package, sliced
- 6-7 cups green cabbage about 1 small cabbage, chopped
- 1 small white onion chopped
- 5-6 cloves garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil divided
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 -1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons parsley chopped, fresh
Instructions
- Add 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil to a large saute pan and heat on medium high. Add kielbasa in one single layer and brown for about 2 minutes on one side and then flip and brown another 2 minutes on the other side. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Turn heat down to medium and add onion and garlic. Saute for 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant and onions are translucent.
- Add red wine vinegar and remaining olive oil and mix well and then add cabbage to pan. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes, stirring and mixing often so the cabbage is coated with oil and vinegar.
- Season with paprika and salt and stir well to coat all cabbage with paprika.
- Sauté until cabbage is slightly browned and wilted. Add the kielbasa and mix well and serve!
Notes
- Yellow onion can be used instead of white for a milder sweetness.
- Red cabbage substitutes well for green cabbage if desired.
- Any smoked, fully cooked sausage can replace kielbasa.
- White wine vinegar offers a gentler acidity alternative to red wine vinegar.
