One Pot Orzo Bolognese
Description
One Pot Orzo Bolognese centers on browning ground beef with onions, garlic, and sliced mushrooms before enriching the pan with tomato paste and beef stock. Adding orzo pasta directly into this sauce allows it to cook and soak up the savory mixture, creating a simple but flavorful one-pot meal. The recipe finishes with the addition of frozen peas stirred in at the end and a garnish of Parmesan cheese to add richness.
The flavor balances the meaty richness of the ground beef with the acidity of tomato paste and the earthiness of mushrooms and dried basil. Cooking everything in one pot reduces cleanup and ensures the orzo perfectly absorbs the sauce, leaving it tender yet intact. Adjusting the salt and pepper before adding peas tailors the seasoning to your taste.
Serve this dish on its own or with a light salad to complement the hearty texture. Parmesan cheese adds a sharp finish on top, enhancing the savory depth. This meal works well for weeknight dinners when a satisfying pasta and meat combo is desired without fuss.
A practical tip is to add extra beef stock or tomato paste if the sauce reduces too much during cooking, allowing you to control the consistency of the final dish.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion diced
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1 lb ground beef
- 5 mushroom sliced
- ½ tsp salt or to taste
- ½ tsp black pepper or to taste
- 1 tsp basil dried
- 12 oz tomato paste
- 4 cups beef stock low sodium
- 2 cups orzo
- 1 cup pea frozen
- handful Parmesan Cheese for garnish, optional but recommended
Instructions
- Over medium heat, add olive oil to the pan and sauté the onions for 2 minutes before adding in the garlic and continuing to cook for another minute.
- Add in the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned.
- Add in the mushrooms and season with some salt and pepper along with some dried basil.
- Once the beef is cooked, add in the tomato paste, mix, and beef stock and mix together.
- Once the mixture starts to bubble, add in the orzo to the pan.
- Stirring occasionally, cook until the orzo has soften and is ready to eat, around 7 to 10 minutes.
- Right before the orzo is done, give the dish a taste and see if you need to adjust the seasoning before you add the peas.
- Stir to combine and serve with some parmesan.
Notes
- Add more beef stock or tomato paste during cooking if the sauce reduces too much to keep the dish saucy.
