One-Pot Sausage Broccoli Pasta
Description
One-Pot Sausage Broccoli Pasta features Italian-style sausage browned with diced onions and garlic, forming the flavor base. Chicken broth, heavy cream, dried rosemary, pasta shells, and broccoli florets are added to the pan and cooked together until the sauce thickens and the pasta is tender. The broccoli is cooked until soft, but you can add it later in cooking if you prefer it firmer. Parmesan cheese stirred in at the end adds a rich, savory finish.
Cooking everything in one pot reduces cleanup and allows the pasta to absorb the cream and broth, resulting in a creamy texture without requiring a separate sauce. The sausage adds savory depth and a slightly spicy note if spicy sausage is chosen. The rosemary gives a delicate herbal aroma.
Serve this pasta with extra grated Parmesan on top for an added cheesy touch. This dish can be a weeknight dinner or a casual meal where simplicity and flavor are balanced effectively.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 /2 white onion diced, (about 3/4 cup)
- 8 ounces pork sausage spicy, Italian, or turkey sausage
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 2 cups chicken broth low-sodium
- 1 1/2 /2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 /2 teaspoon rosemary dried
- 1 1/2 /2 cups pasta shells or any other small shape pasta, medium
- 1 1/2 /2 cups broccoli florets
- 1/4 /4 cup Parmesan Cheese more for topping, grated
Instructions
- In a pot or large saucepan with high sides, add the olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the onion and sautee for a couple of minutes. Add the sausage. Brown and crumble the sausage. Add the garlic for the last 30 seconds of cooking.
- Pour in the chicken broth, cream, rosemary, pasta, and broccoli (see note). Bring to a boil and cook for 10-15 minutes or until sauce thickens (mine thickens around 12 minutes).
- Stir in the Parmesan cheese and add salt if needed. Serve immediately with additional grated Parmesan cheese on top.
Notes
- Add broccoli halfway through cooking if you prefer a firmer texture.
- You can use spicy, Italian, or turkey sausage based on your preference.
- The sauce thickens as the pasta cooks and absorbs the liquids, usually around 12 minutes.
