Orange Cake

Orange Cake combines the brightness of fresh orange juice and zest with a moist crumb created by sour cream and oil. Baked in multiple pans and layered with a tangy cream cheese frosting enhanced by orange flavors, this cake is balanced between citrus sharpness and creamy sweetness. It works well as a stand-alone dessert or for celebrations requiring a soft, fragrant cake with a luscious frosting.

Description

Orange Cake features a blend of flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt mixed with wet ingredients including oil, fresh orange juice, eggs, sour cream, and orange zest. The batter is baked in greased pans until a skewer comes out clean, producing a tender, moist cake. The accompanying frosting is a creamy mix of butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar, orange zest, and juice whipped until fluffy. This frosting adds a smooth texture and bright, citrus-infused sweetness to the cake once layered and assembled.

The result is a layered cake that offers moistness from the sour cream and oil, balanced with the refreshing acidity and flavor from the orange components. The cream cheese frosting complements the cake by lending richness and tang. This cake suits occasions that call for a richly textured yet fresh-flavored dessert.

The recipe advises greasing pans thoroughly to prevent sticking and recommends baking times based on pan size. Cooling the cakes slightly before removing from pans helps maintain their shape. The frosting is best prepared by creaming butter and cream cheese well before adding powdered sugar and flavorings for a smooth finish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup neutral cooking oil extra-virgin olive oil, canola, or blood orange evoo, generic cooking oil
  • 1 cup orange juice fresh
  • 3 egg
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons orange zest

Orange Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 - 8- ounce cream cheese softened, package
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 2 Tablespoons orange juice fresh

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, stir flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another mixing bowl, cream oil, orange juice, eggs, sour cream, and orange zest until completely mixed.
  4. Fold in dry ingredients, mixing only until combined.
  5. Generously grease your non-stick cake pans with non-stick cooking spray or grease them with butter and flour. Pour batter into greased (3) 8-inch or (2) 9-inch cake pans.
  6. Bake for 19-21 minutes, depending on the size of pan used. To test if the cakes are done, insert a toothpick in the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cakes are done. Let cool for 15 minutes before removing from pans.
  7. To make frosting:
  8. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and cream cheese for 4 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape down sides of the bowl halfway through mixing. Stir in powdered sugar, orange zest, and orange juice.
  9. Once cakes are cooled, frost with orange cream cheese frosting.
